30 Day Demo Version for Download

Postby unclebuck » Mon Aug 19, 2013 12:24 pm

Here is an idea for getting buy in from clients or visitors to your website when trying to sell dSS.
Create a installer that will be available for use for 30 days, You can add a tickler to your calendar and then every 60 days recreate a new installer, post to your website with a form to access the download link. Then after 60 days change the config on installer one to uninstall and redirect to a website asking them to subscribe if they want to continue to use the app. Or it just gets uninstalled and you have the contact info on file to market to them in the future.
They would actually get 60 days of use, thinking they pulled one over on you, but this way someone who happens to download the file on the 30 day of the free trial wouldn't get burned for only one day of use.
Going to give it try and let you know how it goes.

Good idea unclebuck!

the forms are crazy easy to setup on a wordpress site btw.
check out the plugins: Contact Form 7, Downlaod Monitor, and Email Before Download

Forms are a great way to capture customer info, and market new services in between your downloads.

Let me get this straight...

1. so you would be distributing an installer with (for example) a "demo1" client ID, (and later changing it to "demo2" etc.) which you would manually expire when the time comes... once expired then they are redirected to the purchase page.

2. if/when they subscribe you would create them a custom installer with the new embedded client ID that you give them based on their signup info, and email that to them for installation?

3. after 60 days you rotate the installer available for download with a new client ID embedded (demo2) and so on.

Things I'm thinking of...

1. Make it a 15 day trial. People get disinterested over time I think, maybe 30 days is too long? Then again horrible at understanding the common consumer so take that with a grain of salt.

EDIT: 1a. Perhaps just blatantly advertise on your website that the current demo expires on a certain date. Give it 30 days to function, but then every few weeks update the installer.

2. I would name the client ID demos based on the expire date. This will help you to remember when to expire them. (but remember you can only name IDs with characters valid for standard directory naming convention for both FTP dirs and DOS/Win dirs, so stick to spaces, dashes, and underscores for special characters, e.g. "demo_exp_9-20-13")

Going to think more on this, but great idea.

See responses...
1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Actually I would rotate it every 30 days just not terminate the demo1 until 60 days if someone downloaded it on the 30th day. Since they would be allowed to download unless they fill in the form with email, name, etc then we could send out reminders from the CRM that the FREE trial will be expiring soon, maybe one every two weeks.
Thinking responses...
1) I want them to use it a while recommended maintenance at least once every two weeks, or something like that so they see that it is actually helping the computer perform better.
1a) interesting approach
2. Yep, understand the naming conventions available thanks.
I will keep you posted once we actually get to it. Maybe this weekend :)

Hello Daniel,

I don't think that your post is really in-line with this topic. Seeing as this is your first post I am going to ask that you try to keep things relevant to the request, or main topic of a post.

I do see relevance in your post, but I think it would be more appropriate in the Business section. Your post is more or less covering attaining permission from a client to use their information, which has nothing to do with getting a 30 day trial of dSS.

Thank you.

Hi Marshall and all,

One of my intentions with purchasing DSS was exactly for this purpose: to setup a limited trial for prospective clients. Basically I want to give the product away for free and at some point, disable the software, until the prospect is ready to pay.
Did any one here set this up using Wordpress for example with the aforementioned plugins that Marshall mentioned?
I'm not a WP user, but usually outsource this type of development.
If any one has done this already, and can recommend a WP developer and a walkthrough of how to customize DSS like this, I wouldn't mind paying for the service/support.

Please reply here or private message me to discuss. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
